Well, it is official. Terrell and I have only ten days left of living abroad. I mean, seriously, where did the time go?! One year ago, I remember making the decision to move to China… and it feels like just yesterday. I remember worrying about all of the unknown, packing our bags, putting everything in storage and saying our good byes. Now the time has come to once again pack our bags and say our goodbyes.
Before we go I want to take the time to document and remember how truly amazing of a year it has been. So, I have decided for our last ten days of living in China I am going to countdown my top ten memories from our year abroad.
Feel free to follow along and relive our highlights with us!
Hiking Dragon’s Back in Hong Kong
While living abroad, Terrell and I were able to take a trip out of the country every 60 days. This was due to my visa status and I needed to reset it every 2 months, but honestly it was probably the best thing that happened to us. It forced us to plan a trip and explore every 60 days, no matter what.
Our first trip out of China was to Hong Kong and was it one for the books. We had a short 4 days to explore the ginormous city, but we sure did make the most of it. Even though the city was filled with endless food options, the iconic harbor, and picture perfect views, I know that hiking Dragon’s Back was my favorite memory of all.
This hike is a beautiful day trip just outside of the city. For those of you who don’t know us, Terrell is not really an outdoorsy type of person, but he suffers through hiking and all the nature because he knows I love it so much. So, after my research of Dragon’s Bike I thought I found the perfect compromise for us… a 30 – 45 minute hike that is easy and ends with a beautiful view, meaning we are both happy!
So we began… we catch the bus to a random bus stop outside of the city and jump on another bus to get to the starting point. Once we arrived at the starting point, we saw tons of other hikers so we knew we were in the right spot! The hike began with beautiful views within the first 5 minutes of hiking and I was smiling from ear to ear because I was in my happy place.
After climbing for about 30 minutes, we reached the top of the mountain and took in the amazing views from the lookout. From the research I had done, all the blogs talked about ending at a beach in the middle of the forest area and it was a must see. So, I convinced Terrell to hike down the opposite way we came up, expecting that it would take us about the same amount of time to hike down as it did to hike up….
That is where I went wrong. After hiking for about 2 hours down towards the beach I was no longer in my happy place. We hadn’t seen any other hikers for a good 45 minutes, we were almost out of water and I was so burnt that my shoulders looked like tomatoes (and it wasn’t even sunny out!!). Even though we were not sure of our location, we continued to follow the path and finally after another hour or so, we found the beach!
I am still unsure if we followed the right path, got lost or made our own knew trail… but we found it! Because of the views + the story, this hike made our top ten memories of living abroad.
Here are some of our favorite pictures from the hike, enjoy!
